Holocene Epoch

The Holocene Epoch is the current epoch of Earth history. It begins after the last ice age and encompasses the entire span of human civilisation, from agriculture to the present day.

Holocene Epoch

The Holocene Epoch begins approximately 11,700 years ago, following the end of the last major glacial period. It marks a shift to a warmer and more stable climate compared to the extreme fluctuations that characterised earlier Quaternary time.

This climatic stability proves decisive. Glaciers retreat, sea levels rise to near-modern positions, and ecosystems settle into patterns that persist for thousands of years. Forests expand, rivers stabilise, and predictable seasonal cycles take hold across much of the planet.

Within this window, humans transition from nomadic hunter-gatherers to agricultural societies. Permanent settlements appear, followed by cities, writing, states, and complex technologies. All recorded history — including science, art, philosophy, and global civilisation — unfolds entirely within the Holocene.

From a cosmic perspective, the Holocene is vanishingly brief. It occupies only the final moments of a universe already nearly 14 billion years old. Yet within this narrow interval, the planet develops memory, culture, and the capacity to reflect on deep time itself.

The Holocene is still ongoing. Whether it remains a stable epoch or gives way to a newly defined human-shaped age is a question that now lies in the hands of its most recent inhabitants.

Human-History Holocene

Human-History Holocene

The Human Holocene begins when human activity crosses a threshold from local influence to persistent planetary impact. The rise of agriculture marks this transition. Forests are cleared, species are domesticated, and…

Pre-Human-History

Pre-Human-History

The Pre-Human Holocene begins with the end of the last major ice age, when Earth’s climate shifts into a warmer and more stable state. Glaciers retreat, sea levels rise toward modern positions, and ecosystems reorganise…
